Mumbai: Devendra Gangadharrao Fadnavis was born on 22 July 1970. He has been the president of Maharashtra state unit of Bharatiya Janata Party and an MLA from Nagpur. He has also served as Mayor of Nagpur.
His political career started in the early nineties, when he joined the BJP as a ward President of its youth wing. He became the youngest municipal corporator of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation at the age of 21 and remained corporator for two consecutive terms, in 1992 and 1997.
He was the second youngest mayor elected in India, when he served as the Mayor of Nagpur at the age of 27, in 1997. He is also the only person to be re-elected as the Mayor in Council in Maharashtra. He has been an MLA representing Nagpur, since, 1999.
His father, Gangadharrao Fadnavis, was an MLC from Nagpur (first with Jan Sangh, later Janata Party, and BJP) who died of cancer in 1987. His mother, Sarita Fadnavis, belonged to the Kaloti family from Amravati. She was the Director of Vidarbh Housing Credit Society. In his childhood, Fadnavis joined the RSS Shakha at Trikoni Park in Nagpur.
He went to Dharampeth Jr College in 1986-87 after which he completed a 5 year law degree from Law College in Nagpur. From 1986-89, he was an active member of ABVP. In the ABVP, he started as a ground worker at the grassroots where he painted walls and stuck promotional posters on them for politicians. He also has a Post Graduate Degree in Business Management and a diploma in Project Management from DSE.(German Foundation for International Development), Berlin.
Born in a middle class Deshastha Bhramin family, he married Amruta Ranade in 2006. She is a branch manager of Axis Bank in Nagpur. Ranade hails from a non-political family background. Her parents are doctors in Nagpur. Devendra and Amruta have a daughter named Divija.
