New Delhi: The Election Commission has sought BJP's comments on the promise in its manifesto for Uttar Pradesh poll of construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya following complaints that the party has "violated" the model code of conduct by making the promise.
A number of organisations have complained to the poll body for restraining BJP from raising the issue of Ram temple construction.
Organisations like Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Mahasabha, Akhil Bhartiya Sant Samiti and Sant Mahasabha have complained to the Election Commission asking it for directing BJP to remove the poll promise of Ram temple construction from its manifesto.
The office-bearers of Hindu Mahasabha, Sant Mahasabha and Sant Samiti have in their complaints to EC said the matter of Ram temple construction is very sensitive and concerns the sentiments of lakhs of Hindus and BJP should not be allowed to politicise it.
They have also alleged that by raising the matter as a major poll promise, BJP has violated the model code of conduct and the Constitution, besides the orders of the Supreme Court.
The Election Commission has asked the Bharatiya Janata Party president to give its comments on the complaints before initiating further in the matter.
