Kanpur: The emergence of electronic voting machines (EVM) has made counting of votes easy and quick but many feel that this has also caused a decline in the excitement levels which used to be there among people when it was a manual process.
"Earlier, the vote counting used to take 2-3 days during which party supporters sat outside the counting office and shouted slogans in favour of their candidate. It was like a fair", Jyoti Bajpai, Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association Director said.
With the Election Commission becoming tough, the usual sight of supporters shouting slogans outside counting office has also become extinct.
"We used to sit outside counting office with party members. But now due to strictness of Election Commission no body does that", said Salman a shopkeeper.
"Machines have made counting easy but we don't enjoy as much as we used to do earlier, when, counting took days and with every passing hours excitement levels soared if your candidate was leading", Rohit Kohli, a social worker said.
For Mahe Tilat Siddiqui, a famous poetess and writer there is no charm left in counting. "I used to be so excited that I would finish all my chorus early and sit in front of television set during counting but not any more", Siddiqui said.
However, there are others who praise the electronic counting way. "Machines save a lot of time and results are out in one day only" said Harsh Sinha, a student.
