New Delhi: Ahead of the Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP has received a major setback — party MP from Gorakhpur, Mahant Adityanath, will field his own candidates in 14 districts.
Adiytanath has been at loggerheads with a section of the party high command over ticket distribution. Supporters of the mahant of the Gorakhdham shrine in eastern UP will now contest from 75 constituencies in the state.
His demand for 22 seats for his followers was turned down by the BJP state leadership. Following the “humiliation” meted out to him, he resigned from the BJP’s national executive.
The polling for the first phase of Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh will begin on April 7 and the subsequent six phases will end by May 7.
In all likelihood, the polls will witness a four-cornered contest, with the incumbent Samajwadi Party making a valiant effort to retain power and the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party trying to emerge as the single largest party.
The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress will be the two other main contenders in the race.
