New Delhi: In what might appear to be an irresponsible statement, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O' Brien on Tuesday said that he would have shot dead the perpetrators if the December 16 gangrape incident would have happened with his daughter.
While taken part in the discussion in Rajya Sabha on amending the Juvenile Justice Bill, Derek O'Brien said, "God forbid if it was my daughter, then would I have hired the best lawyers or taken out the gun and shot the culprits. I say this with full responsibility, inclined to say that I would have taken out a gun and shot the culprits."
The Bill has been taken up on an urgent basis in the Upper House as the juvenile rapist in the Delhi gangrape and murder case walked free after completing his three years sentence in the remand home. The debate has going on for years for lowering the age of the juvenile convicts.
Lending support to the Bill, TMC Derek O'Brien said, "I urge Parliament to pass a bill which all citizens want. We should not wait endlessly to pass an ideal bill."
Derek O'Brien asks the government "To increase the punishment term. Apart from financial, psychological, educational support should be given to the juveniles once they are out of remand homes."
