The split is now wide open in the Samajwadi Party.

New Delhi: The Amar Singh-Azam Khan rift in the Samajwadi Party (SP) has reached a head. Azam Khan is at loggerheads with the party over issues like fielding Jaya Prada from Rampur and the friendship between Mulayam Singh Yadav and Kalyan Singh.

His rebellion began after Amar Singh wooed former BJP leader Kalyan Singh into the fold of the party, but things came to a head when the party decided to field Jaya Prada from his stronghold, the Rampur Lok Sabha seat.

"The issue is not Rampur or Moradabad, the issue is Kalyan SIngh. We call him a murderer, destroyer of the house of Allah, nobody has can forgive him. It is a mistake. If I knew Kalyan was joining us, I would have stopped it," Azam Khan stated.

Meanwhile, it is being alleged that Khan is now openly encouraging his supporters to vote for the Congress and defeat Jaya Prada. On Sunday, Khan's supporters chanted pro-Congress slogans as he stood amidst the crowd. 'Azam Khan ki baat pe, muhar lagegi haath pe' (Vote for the Congress because Azam Khan says so), chanted his supporters.

However, he denied the allegation saying that it was one which pained him. "Joining the Congress would be a bargain of my life's work he stated."

Azam Khan is the party's Muslim face and the damage to the Samajwadi Party would be irreparable.

Meanwhile, Noor Bano, the Congress candidate from Rampur who Azam Khan is allegedly supporting, says, "I have known Azam Khan from last 30 years. He is an experienced politician and he knows what is right and what is wrong. He is raising his voice for the right thing. Whether he wants to join us or not that is up to him. We and all Muslims can understand the pain of Azam Khan."

What's your reaction?
