Chennai: Veteran actor Kamal Haasan will turn 63 on November 7 and he has asked the people of Tamil Nadu to be ready for a big announcement on his birthday.
In his weekly column to a regional magazine, Vikatan, he wrote: "I will tell everything on November 7. I will announce arrangements in place for our members to be in touch with me and the people. Let us gather without delay to draft our action plan. I invite not just volunteers but also leaders. I invite you if you think it is a responsibility to serve Tamil Nadu. Stay away if you think you are making a sacrifice."
Haasan said he’ll announce a way in which he can communicate with the people of Tamil Nadu. While there was speculation that the actor may announce his political plans, he clarified that he won’t make any such announcement based on media speculation.
"Can't announce political party based on media speculation. Meeting fans on November 7 is a tradition. Political announcements will be made only on people's forum," he tweeted.
A source, who is in the know of developments, said Haasan is likely to launch an app-based platform for the public to communicate with the veteran actor and his team. The actor is likely to ask members to join a ‘people’s movement’ that would raise issues that matter to the people of the state.
In the column, Haasan also mentioned an NGO - Arappor Iyakkam - that raises many issues. Sources said that he may do something similar to what the NGO has done. Arappor Iyakkam had done a series of investigations on corruption in the state.
The actor, however, has also not out-rightly denied that he could make a political debut.
In an interview to CNN-News18, he said he can’t commit to a time-frame but is trying to launch a party before the New Year. “I am talking to various people, taking advice from them. As there is no time limit, I cannot say."
He had met Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal recently. He admitted that he had discussed politics with the two leaders and got inputs ahead of his final announcement.
Political analyst Sumanth Raman said Haasan should give a concrete timeline if he is entering politics. “There is no point in saying that he will announce something on Nov 7 and later clarifying that there is no such announcement. He should be more decisive. It is reminding me of Rajinikanth's statements. It leaves people confused. If this continues for too long, he (Kamal) may lose his credibility.”
