Kerala CPM's Kodiyeri Balakrishnan's Son Accused of Fraud in Dubai, Might See Interpol Warrant

New Delhi: In a major embarrassment to the ruling CPM in Kerala, a Dubai resident has accused Binoy Kodiyeri, the elder son of the party’s state secretary, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, of cheating his firm of crores. The complaint came to the fore on Wednesday.

The complaint, filed by Hasan Ismaeel Abdulla Almarzooqi to CPI-M Politburo, states that Binoy defaulted on payment of Rs 13 crores that he had borrowed to buy an Audi A8. Binoy had agreed to pay back the amount in EMIs. Hasan is a partner at the company, Jaas Tourim LLC. The complaint further says that Binoy absconded from the UAE and several attempts were made to contact him and his father too but ended in vain. The company has moved to seek an Interpol red warrant against Binoy.

Hasan’s complaint stated that Binoy knew his partner which is how he approached them for a loan. Binoy assured them that the money, which included approximately Rs 53 lakhs for the car and an additional Rs 45 lakh for other business deals, would be paid by June 2016 but that never happened. Cheques submitted by him bounced due to lack of funds. He was forced to file two criminal cases at the Dubai Police General Headquarters in 2016. The complainant claims that the court then instructed approaching the Interpol to bring Binoy back since the Dubai public prosecution had declared him a willful defaulter.

State Is Harboring Fugitives: Opposition

The opposition attacked the ruling party saying that the CPM must issue an explanation on the allegations. Speaking to News18, BJP’s national executive committee member and former state president V Muraleedharan said that he had written to the Enforcement Directorate to launch a probe into the allegations, adding that the allegations were grave.

The party has also accused CPM of asserting pressure on the complainant to withdraw the complaint, adding that the state was now harboring ‘fugitives’. Muraleedharan’s letter also states that CPI(M) ran a ‘politico-economic mafia’ with a clout that reached to businesses, both legitimate and illegitimate.

Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala, at a press meet, also demanded a proper explanation from the ruling party.
