The CPI(M) on Friday named polit buro member Pinarayi Vijayan as the next chief minister of Kerala, a day after riding to power on a campaign led by popular leader VS Achuthanandan.
"Considering VS Achuthanandan’s age, Pinarayi Vijayan will be proposed as leader of LDF," CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said at a press conference in Delhi.
The decision to nominate 72-year-old Vijayan was taken at the state secretariat which met at AKG Bhavan, the CPI(M) headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, party sources said.
Yechury hailed the efforts of party veteran VS Achutanandan who was also in the race for the post.
"VS Achuthanandan and Vijayan played a big role in this election. What Fidel Castro is for Cuba, VS Achuthanandan is for the revolutionary movement in Kerala," he said.
93-year-old Achutanandan was called to the state secretariat and informed about the decision.
Reacting to the development, N Ram, Chairman, Kasturi & sons, termed Vijayan's elevation for the top job as the "best for the party and people of Kerala".
"CPM's decision was best for the party & people of Kerala. A visionary role for VS Achuthananthan is expected now," he said.
