Mangalore: A Congress councillor in Mangalore has alleged that she was molested by a group of men from the right-wing group Hindu Jagarana Vedike while she was campaigning for her party on Sunday. The councillor claims that the incident happened while she was holding a door-to-door campaign in Kodigere area.
According to her, she was stopped by a group of men in a car who abused her verbally. The councillor alleged that the men part of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike, warned her to stop campaigning. She also alleged that she was later surrounded by the men and a 17-year-old boy assaulted her in full public view.
The leaders of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike have, however, denied the charges calling the allegations baseless. They said members of their organisation were not involved in the incident but it was the local residents who questioned the councillor. The right- wing group has called it an election propoganda. Mangalore police said a case has been registered in this matter.
A video clip, supposedly of incident, is making the rounds on WhatsApp. The video only shows an argument between the councillor and a group of men. The councillor said that she has been harassed by the group several times before. Vedike has denied the charges, and has accused her of lying.
