Puducherry: The new Congress Ministry in Puducherry headed by V Vaithilingam was sworn-in on Thursday. He will become Chief Minster for second term. He had held the post between 1991 and 1996.
Lt Governor Govind Singh Gurjar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr Vaithilingam and his five cabinet collegues at a simple function at the Raj Nivas .
Mr V Valsaraj, Mr Malladi Krishna Rao, Mr Kandasamy and Mr M O H F Shajahan, who were ministers in the previous Rangasamy government were retained while Mr Namasivayam, a close relative of Mr Rangasamy was the new face in the cabinet.
Earlier On Monday, a majority of legislators of the ruling Congress had expressed their wish to remove Rangasamy during separate meetings with senior party leader Vayalar Ravi, who announced that Sonia Gandhi had been empowered to take a decision on the matter.
Party position in the Puducherry assembly: Congress 10; DMK 7, AIADMK 3; Puducherry Munnetra Congress 3, Independents 3, Communist Party of India 1; MDMK 1; nominated - 3 (one each belonging to Congress, CPI and PMK).
Rangasamy was removed following fortnight-long protests led by a majority of party legislators against his leadership.
