New Delhi: The Left's spat with the UPA over the Indo-US nuclear deal has not died down yet and it has already found a new issue to badger the government.
The CPI-M's Tamil Nadu unit on Tuesday warned the UPA Government at the Centre against succumbing to the pressure of the 'communal forces' and giving up the Sethusamudram project.
"It was shocking to note that the Centre, instead of evincing more interest in speedy implementation of the project, had sought three months time from the Supreme Court to reconsider the issue," state CPI-M secretary N Varadarajan said in a statement.
He said the BJP and other 'communal forces' had taken up the "illusionary issue of Ram Setu" and made a big issue of the affidavit submitted by the Centre.
Earlier in the day, CPM chief Prakash Karat also served a fresh warning on the government, asking it not to operationalise the Indo-US civil nuclear deal for the next six months. He said the deal and other issues related to it should be discussed in the next session of Parliament.
While India's atomic energy chief Anil Kakodkar is already in Vienna for the general conference of the IAEA, the Left has warned the government against going ahead with negotiations on India-specific safeguards, which they say is tantamount to operationalising the deal.
