Indian National Congress's candidate Amarinder Singh has won the Patiala seat, defeating SAD's candidate Gen JJ Singh and AAP's Dr Balbir Singh. Amarinder Singh got 72,586 votes.
The main candidates from Patiala were Dr.Balbir Singh (AAP), Amarinder Singh (INC) and General JJ Singh (SAD).
Patiala is constituency No. 115 of Punjab legislative assembly. Punjab has 117 assembly constituencies and it returns 13 MPs to the Lok Sabha. Patiala assembly constituency is situated in Patiala district of the state and comes under Patiala Lok Sabha constituency. It is an open constituency.
According to data with the Election Commission of India, Patiala assembly constituency has 1,40,314 registered voters. It comprises 73,852 male and 66,462 female registered voters.
In the 2012 Assembly elections, the Congress won this constituency by a thumping margin of 42,318 votes. Eminent Congress member Amarinder Singh was the winning candidate and he got 66,041 votes. With 23,723 votes, the runner-up was Surjit Singh Kohli from Shiromani Akali Dal. The voter turnout was 68.09 %.
In 2012, the state had voted in favour of the BJP-Akali Dal combine, bringing Parkash Singh Badal back to power.
This time the ruling combine faced off against a resurgent Congress and the debutant Aam Aadmi Party. The state was the first to vote among the five states that went to the polls this time. Elections to the 117-seat Punjab assembly were held on February 4.
Exit polls had predicted a drubbing for the BJP-Akali Dal combine in the state with the Congress and the AAP predicted to be neck-and-neck.
