National Development Council, chaired by the PM, had approved the Approach Paper to the 12th Plan.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday reviewed the progress made in preparing the 12th Five Year Plan document, which envisages 9 per cent annual economic growth in the five-year period.

"The Prime Minister called a meeting of the Planning Commission's members to see the progress on the 12th Plan (2012-17) document," Planning Commission Member Abhijit Sen told after the meeting.

Besides, Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, other regular members of the Commission including Mihir Shah and BK Chaturvedi attended the meeting.

Country's highest policy making body National Development Council chaired by the Prime Minister had approved the Approach Paper to the 12th Plan.

The document provides a broad framework of the government policy to be pursued in the five-year period to achieve the desired growth rate.

The economy in the current fiscal is likely to expand by 6.9 per cent as per the latest estimates of the Central Statistical Organisation.

India was growing by over 9 per cent before the global financial crisis in 2008 pulled down the economic growth to 6.8 per cent in 2008-09.
