New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Sudnay expressed deep sorrow at the demise of former prime minister Chandra Shekhar.
Chatterjee was quoted by news agency PTI as saying, “Chandra Shekhar was a very respective friend, a long time colleague in Parliament and a great leader."
The former PM died on Sunday at the Apollo Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for the last three months.
Former prime minister I K Gujral mourned Chandra Shekhar’s death.
"The contribution he made to our political life will be remembered," Gujral said, adding he personally lost a "very close friend."
Union Water Resources Minister Saif-ud-din Soz and BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi also expressed sorrow.
"He never compromised with his ideals and principles. His demise is huge loss for all of us," Naqvi was quoted as saying.
Haryana Governor A R Kidwai and Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda condoled the death of Chandra Shekhar.
Hooda in his condolence message, described the former prime minister as a man of masses and a seasoned parliamentarian who served the nation as an MP by getting elected to Lok Sabha eight times.
He also offered to set up a memorial for the deceased leader at Bhindsi in Gurgaon district if his family members desired.
The former Prime Minister was a frequent visitor to Bhindsi where he had also set up an Ashram.
