Panaji: Election Commission of India has asked central forces to guard the borders of Goa to prevent smuggling in of fake currency ahead of the March 3 assembly polls in the state. Joint Chief Electoral Officer Narayan Navti said here today that Border Security Force and special forces will be deployed to watch state's borders.
"(Ahead of the election) there is a possibility that fake notes might be smuggled into the state. Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed central forces to keep a vigil," Navti said. Fake currency could be used to woo voters. Goa's borders are otherwise scarcely guarded. Navti also said that Election Commission was receiving complaints about irregularities from various political parties and individuals, which were attended to within 24 hours.
"Goa Liquor Traders Association has complained that excise inspector posted at Mapusa was harassing the wholesalers," he said. The inspector was allegedly taking away expensive liquor bottles, threatening the traders to register cases against them under the code of conduct. "We have referred the matter to Excise Department," he said.
ECI has also issued notices to three heads of department after it was noticed that the information provided by them about new recruitment did not tally. The ECI recently put the new recruitments in six departments in abeyance.
EC officials raided Health Department office on Thursday to get some recruitment-related documents. "The detailed report about the department will be sent to Chief Secretary," Navti said.
