New Delhi: One of the five persons arrested in connection with the Presidency University ransack case has got bail while the rest have been sent to judicial custody till April 26. The five arrested included Shubhojeet Burman and Jayanta Haldar. The mother of the former has admitted that he is a Trinamool Chhatra Parishad worker even as the party denies any hand in the attack.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee spoke to the University's Vice Chancellor on Friday and assured full support to her. Speaking to CNN-IBN, Vice Chancellor Malabika Sarkar said, "I received a call from the Chief Minister. She has assured full support to us. Mamata said that Presidency was her dream project and she wouldn't let anything come in the way of achieving that goal."
Meanwhile, the Trinamool's student wing has lodged a counter-complaint against SFI activists in the Presidency University for provoking them.
Meanwhile, Governor MK Narayanan was expected to meet students at Presidency University at 4.30 pm on Friday. He was caught in the political crossfire between the Left and the Trinamool Congress after he asked the CPM to apologise for the attack on West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra by its party cadres in Delhi. The CPM lashed out at Narayanan with General Secretary Prakash Karat writing to President Pranab Mukherjee protesting against the Governor's intervention.
Hundreds of Presidency University students and teachers on Thursday hit the streets protesting the attack on their university. They marched for five kilometres condemning the violence at the prestigious Baker's Lab in Presidency University.
Suspected members of the Trinamool Congress youth wing allegedly barged into the university premises on Wednesday and manhandled them. Armed with sticks, they ransacked the science lab where classes were being conducted. Some teachers were allegedly assaulted too. The attack came despite West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's appeal for non-violent protests.
Female students at Presidency University alleged that the attackers even threatened them with rape. "We were threatened with rape, beaten up. The hooligans threatened me thrice saying if I leave the campus, they'll rape me," said a student.
