RaGa vs Annie Raja in Wayanad: Gandhi Scion Has Assets Worth Rs 20 Cr, Left Candidate Declares Rs 72 Lakh
Nomination papers for the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency filed by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi show that he has Rs 50,000 cash in hand, as compared to Rs 10,000 declared by Left candidate Annie Raja

Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has assets worth Rs 20 crore with an annual income of more than Rs 1 crore, as per his nomination papers filed for the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency on Wednesday. He is pitted against the Left’s Annie Raja, whose papers showed that her total assets are worth only Rs 72 lakh.

While contesting from Wayanad, Gandhi had declared assets worth Rs 16 crore in the 2019 general elections. Five years on, in his latest affidavit, he has cited the market value of his immovable assets as of today.

Annie has declared only Rs 10,000 cash in hand, bank deposits worth Rs 62,000, jewellery worth Rs 25,000 and an inherited property worth Rs 71 lakh.

Gandhi has declared Rs 55,000 cash, bank deposits of Rs 26.25 lakh and investments in mutual funds, bonds, shares and debentures worth Rs 8.5 crore. He also has savings in the public provident fund (PPF) with the State Bank of India worth Rs 61.5 lakh. He has also declared jewellery worth Rs 4.2 lakh and agricultural land, owned jointly with Priyanka Gandhi in Delhi’s Mehrauli, along with office space in Gurugram valued at Rs 11 crore.

In 2019, Gandhi had declared a lower amount of cash at Rs 40,000 and bank deposits on the lower side at Rs 17.93 lakh. His investment in shares was also lower at Rs 5.19 crore while his PPF account balance in the SBI stood at about Rs 40 lakh. Jewellery was worth Rs 2.91 lakh and he had owned the same land and properties, then valued at Rs 10 crore.

Last time, the Congress MP also owed a personal loan of Rs 5 lakh from his mother Sonia Gandhi but that is not mentioned in his latest nomination. He has not declared ownership of any motor vehicle.

When it comes to criminal record, Gandhi has declared that he is facing 18 cases, including a defamation case in which he was convicted by the trial court last year and the same was stayed by the Supreme Court.

In a separate affidavit, the Congress has blamed the BJP and RSS for filing 18 “politically motivated” cases against him and said, in many cases, the charges have not been framed by courts. The party has also called Gandhi a leader with a “long and distinguished political and electoral track record”.
