New Delhi: The Congress party is in fight mode. But it is not to win elections. It’s the old versus young fight within the grand old party.
It was almost a solo fight by the Captain while Rahul Gandhi was concentrating on Uttar Pradesh. And this victory in Punjab is what the seniors are throwing back at Rahul and his team when they complain about resistance from the old guard.
And defeat after defeat led to increased disillusionment within the cadre. It's been three years since the Lok Sabha elections and Congress is yet to hold a stock-taking meeting. An All India Congress Committee (AICC) reshuffle is waiting to happen. In fact, a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting held three months ago accepted Rahul to be party president.
Sachin Pilot was appointed the Pradesh Congress chief of Rajasthan over two years ago. He shifted base to Jaipur and is virtually in control of the state. But even he knows that when elections come, the powerful old warhorse Ashok Gehlot cannot be ignored.
While the BJP has begun to look at the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as the big challenge, the Congress is still trying to figure out how to cope with the 2014 loss.
