Chandigarh: Rajya Sabha member from Haryana, Shadi Lal Batra, whose term was expiring next month, retained his seat as he was on Thursday declared elected uncontested to the Upper House.
As no other candidate was in the fray, the Congress leader was declared elected uncontested, official sources said.
Batra, considered a staunch loyalist of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, had on Monday filed his nomination.
His candidature was supported by the Haryana Congress MLAs and independent MLAs in Haryana Assembly. Batra is a sitting Member of the Council of States from Haryana, and had so far completed a tenure of about two-and-a-half years, as his previous term was to expire on April two.
Having twice served the State as a Member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly from Rohtak, Batra also remained Chairman of the Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board. The ruling Congress was expected to retain the seat as it has a strength of 46 in the 90 member state assembly and also enjoys the support of the Independents.
