Chennai: Congress' support to DMK candidate Kanimozhi was only restricted to the recent Rajya Sabha polls and a decision on the alliance for 2014 Lok Sabha polls would be taken later, AICC General Secretary Mukul Wasnik said on Sunday. "Our decision to support DMK was only for the Rajya Sabha polls. We cannot say anything more. Lok Sabha polls are sometime away and it is too early to say anything on that," Wasnik told reporters in Chennai.
Congress took the decision to support DMK after consultations with all senior party leaders and MLAs in the state, Wasnik, in-charge of party affairs in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry, said. To a query on whether there was any possibility of taking DMDK under its fold in the future, Wasnik said the party leadership will decide on that during the run up to the Lok Sabha polls. Meanwhile, TNCC president BS Gnanadesikan said that Congress cannot be isolated by any party.
DMK, which snapped its nine-year-old ties with UPA in March on the Sri Lankan issue, had sought the support of five MLAs of Congress to ensure re-election of Kanimozhi in the June 27 Rajya Sabha polls, as it had only 23 MLAs in the 234 member Assembly.
