Chennai: A week after condemning the continued reduction in Central funds for modernisation of the Tamil Nadu Police, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday announced a number of measures to give a fillip to the force, including a package of Rs 1,000-crore to develop the department's infrastructure over the next four years, of which Rs 250 crore would be allocated this year.
Other steps announced by the CM in the State Assembly include setting up of police training schools in all districts, recruitment of 19,620 new personnel, establishment of a Tamil Nadu Industrial Security Force and State Police Master Control Room, providing digital-based radios for Chennai and Tiruchy Commissionerates, procuring bullet proof jackets, formation of a cyber lab and strengthening of intelligence network at the village level.
On April 6, participating in a Chief Ministers’ meet convened by the Prime Minister, Jayalalithaa had said the Central share in the modernisation of Tamil Nadu police, which was Rs 75.75 crore in 2007-08, had come down to a mere Rs 42.27 crore in 2011-12. In contrast, her government sanctioned Rs 357 crore for the same in 2011-12.
Replying to a discussion on the demands for grants for the police department, the CM rubbished allegation of DMK members that cases had been foisted against their partymen out of political animosity. Citing details about the number of persons charged under the Goondas Act, as well as in other cases, the CM said the number of cases resolved in the State had gone up since the AIADMK assumed office in May last year.
