Kolkata: Ruling out SEZ status to IT major Infosys, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said the state government has decided against the special economic zones and will stick to it.
"It can't be that we will give SEZ status to Infosys and not give it to others when we have taken a policy decision that we will not go for SEZ. We cannot discriminate against the law. When we have decided not to give SEZ, we will stick to it," Mamata told reporters at the state secretariat.
Stating that some were opposing her for not allowing SEZ, the Chief Minister said, "If I inform you that my government is against SEZ, then how will I allow SEZ to Infosys. It can set up its unit. Sorry, I will not say that let them get SEZ status.
"Our government will provide all facilities to Infosys available at our disposal. We welcome it to set up a unit here," she said.
The company was recently allotted 50 acre at Rajarhat area near the metropolis for setting up its first facility in the state.
The Chief Minister said that the state government was committed to protecting the right of farmers and farmland would not be forcibly acquired. "This is a decision of the state government."
The Chief Minister said that the government would not relax the urban ceiling laws.
