New Delhi: The Bahujan Samaj Party has taken a huge lead over its rivals in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections though the final outcome is likely to throw up a hung Assembly.

Mulayam Singh's Samajawadi party, heading a coalition government, was fighting with the BJP for the second slot while Congress was a distant fourth.

The UP Assembly has a strength of 403 and election was countermanded in one seat due to the death of a candidate.

Counting of votes in Baharaich town constituency was stopped following a defect in the electronic voting machines.

Victory celebrations began at the Mall Avenue residence of Mayawati, where party workers distributed sweets among themselves and to hordes of journalists present there.

Several ministers in the Mulayam Singh Yadav cabinet were trailing in their constituencies though the Chief Minister was leading in Gunnaur and Bharthana seats.

Prominent among ministers who trailed in their seats were Narad Rai, Yogesh Pratap Singh, Arvind Singh Gope, Harishankar Tewari, Mayankeshwar Saran Singh, Raja Ram Pandey, Vinod Kumar Singh, and Shardanand Anchal.

Those who were leading included Minister Azam Khan, Ambika Chaudhary, Shivpal Singh Yadav, Naresh Agarwal and Ashok Bajpai.

Vidhan Sabha Deputy Speaker Rajesh Agarwal and Congress Legislature Party leader Pramod Tewari were ahead in their seats while senior BJP leader Lalji Tandon trailed in Lucknow West constituency.

Senior Congress leader Jagadambika Pal, Apna Dal president Sonelal Patel, senior BJP leader Om Prakash Singh, state BJP president Kesri Nath Tripathi and UPCC president Salman Khursheed's wife Louis were also trailing.
