New Delhi: Trouble for the Aam Aadmi Party government continues as Delhi Law Minister Jitender Singh Tomar has been arrested on charges of cheating, forgery and getting jobs on fake degree. Tomar, accused with having a fake law degree, has been charged under various IPC sections including 420 (cheating). He has also been charged under IPC sections 467 (forgery), 468 (forgery with purpose of cheating) and 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy).
Here are the political reactions on Tomar's arrest:
Jitender Singh Tomar, the Tri-Nagar MLA: Around 30-40 policemen along with an Additional Commissioner of Police came to my office and said that they wanted to speak to me and would talk at my place. I have not been served any arrest warrant. I have not been given any details. They are not giving any details, they are harassing me. This is a political vendetta.
Delhi Police: We have followed all guidelines while making the arrest. We got a complaint from Bar Council of Delhi Head. It was found that the documents and certificates produced seemed to be forged and based on this complaint we formed teams to look into this matter.
Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel: I was not informed about his arrest, I should have been informed. According to the Constitution, The Speaker should be informed before arresting of any MLA of Delhi Assembly.
AAP spokesperson Sanjay Singh: Jitender Tomar's case is in the High Court then why is the arrest. Is it to put pressure? The Lieutenant Governor and the Modi government are trying to put pressure on us. Our fight is against corruption will continue.
AAP leader Ashutosh: The officers came and took him. The matter is in court. Why actions are not taken against BJP leaders who have fake degree? It's an emergency like situation in Delhi.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh: There is no question of interference by the Home Ministry. The law will take its course in this matter.
BJP leader Satish Upadhyay: Law is supreme. Let law do its work. The Delhi government should cooperate. Delhi Police must have a detailed investigation with evidence when they have arrested the state Law Minister.
Former IPS officer Kiran Bedi: Delhi Police will not arrest him without any strong evidence. Delhi Police will have to clear whether he has been arrested or picked up for questioning. I do not think police will arrest him without solid evidence.
BJP leader Shazia Ilmi: The Law Minister misrepresented facts, which is the total violation of the Representation of People's Act whereby everybody declares the educational qualification before the public and to the Election Commission before they file the candidature that is punishable.
DPCC Chief Ajay Maken: This is the first time in history of Delhi that a Minister has been arrested, it is really shameful. Tomar should resign and so should Kejriwal. Kejriwal has double standards, why is he waiting for court order this case. This matter was raised by Prashant Bhushan and then why didn't he act. When the matter is heard then public prosecutor would be appointed by Delhi government.
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge: This shows what kind of government is being run by Kejriwal. The Chief Minister promised a corruption free state and his own minister has been arrested for forgery.
Congress leader RPN Singh: With daily dose of Delhi drama, Centre and state government showing they have no clue how to govern India's capital city.
Congress leader Veerappa Moily: The law and order machinery in Delhi has clearly broken down. How can AAP government now face people if their Law Minister has been arrested?
The Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) Chairman claimed there was no "political vendetta" behind the complaint lodged by the organisation against the Law Minister BCD Chairman KK Manan alleged that Tomar's law degrees were forged and they had given a complaint to Delhi Police on May 11 in this regard and the police after taking cognisance of it, lodged an FIR and arrested the minister this morning. "Instead of shunting out this person, the chief minister and the party are creating 'halla gulla' (ruckus). Why the CM has not got Tomar's claim verified, he has all the infrastructure to get it done," Manan said, adding that "there is no political vendetta in this (behind Tomar's arrest)".
Former AAP leader Yogendra Yadav tweeted "the real issue is not technicalities of Tomar's arrest; that's for courts to decide. Issue here is govt's and party's refusal to come clean. (sic)"
