Apple is unlikely to see Tim Cook leave his position as the company’s CEO anytime soon but he did admit that the brand is already putting the wheels in motion to have a successor in place, in case something happens to him.
Cook also talked about his love for working at Apple and how he can’t see going anywhere else but the trillion dollar-valued brand believes in working on succession plans, and he claims they have a detailed plan in place for that to happen, if it is supposed to.
Cook was speaking in a podcast with singer Dua Lipa, revealing details about his focus at Apple, his views on the growing penchant for AI and more. But it is interesting to see Cook talk about future plans at Apple, especially related to his position at the company.
The Apple CEO was asked if they have plans for his successor to which he said, “We’re a company that believes in working on succession plans, so we have very detailed succession plans. Because something unpredictable can always happen. I could step off the wrong curb tomorrow. Hopefully that doesn’t happen, I pray that it doesn’t."
So, when he decided to look into the future, albeit in a brief way, Lipa asked him if those plans included anyone in particular who could replace Cook as the CEO of Apple. “I can’t say that, but I would say that my job is to prepare several people for the ability to succeed."
Interestingly, he made an important point about the direction in which Apple wants to go while bringing the next CEO. “I really want the person to come from within Apple, the next CEO. So that’s my role: That there’s several for the board to pick from." Cook did replace Steve Jobs as the company’s CEO and he has been around at the company for decades which gives him a clear idea about where and how to operate.
We have seen other tech companies follow a similar trajectory in recent times, with the likes of Satya Nadella pushed from within the company to become Microsoft’s CEO. Cook has been instrumental in taking Apple to new heights so it goes without saying that when the day comes, his successor will have really big boots to fill and spearhead Apple into the next era.
