Samsung has made five generations of foldable phones in the market which is now slowly being caught up by its rivals. So, the company is now looking beyond phones, and at the CES 2024 in Las Vegas this week, Samsung is showcasing its plans for the future of foldable devices.
We’re now seeing a full repertoire of foldable screens that can fold inward or outward based on the form factor. The company has quite a few concepts in the works which we’re hoping sees the light out of the tunnel. Foldable laptops have already made their mark with brands like Lenovo and Asus showcasing their market-ready products available to the consumer.
Phones have kind of hit a stagnating block mostly because the form factor now can only see design changes and hardware upgrades.
But the scope to evolve in other segments is widely open and the canvas allows the South Korean brand to reinvent the product for the industry, similar to its approach with the Galaxy Fold lineup. Samsung seems to be aware of the durability concerns with foldable panels, so the company is putting them through rigorous tests by dunking them in water, applying sand on the panel and even hoop balls through the screen to see if it cracks. We’re also keen to see the company try its hand in the rollable segment, where brands like LG showed promise and then flattered everyone with their price tags.
Foldable laptops have shown promise but its functionality is limited and the cost of the technology makes it less accessible to many. It’s time for Samsung to pull another trick to get every other company’s attention in this market. While CES 2024 goes on, the South Korean brand is busy setting the stage for the launch of the new Galaxy S24 series in the US later this month.
