South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co has launched a new tablet device in India for government and enterprise use equipped with iris-recognition technology.
Samsung, in a statement, said the Android-powered tablet - called Galaxy Tab Iris - will be equipped with technology to allow authentication through the recognition of a person's iris for applications including banking and healthcare.
The iris readings would be possible through one of the cameras on the 7-inch display device.
With embedded iris technology in Galaxy Tab Iris, Samsung has initiated the use of contactless technology that provides security for authentication.
Samsung wants to utilise the Aadhaar identification process which serves as an important database for majority of government projects such as Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), National Health Mission (NHM), eHospital program, DigiLocker and more under the Digital India initiative to provide welfare services to citizens.
The Galaxy Tab Iris is UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) compliant. It can be used for child enrolment program where biometrics of the parent is used to authenticate children for Aadhaar enrolment. The tablet will negate the need for multiple pieces of equipment by providing an integrated solution for the child enrolment process.
The Galaxy Tab Iris also sports a 5-megapixel auto focus rear camera and weighs 327grams. The tab support of 14 local languages, comes with an 8GB memory and a 3600mAh battery.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab Iris will be available at a price of INR 13,499.
