A private investigator said that about 40 per cent of the cases he works on are about watching people who might be cheating. He found He found people who cheat on their partners often follow repeated patterns before they meet their secret lovers.
Connecticut Private Investigator Ray Ranno admits that stakeouts can be pretty boring but he claims he’s gotten good at spotting little signs that help him guess what his targets might do next.
Ray Ranno, a detective from Connecticut, says one thing he watches for during stakeouts is when the person he’s following unexpectedly goes to a car wash. He told podcaster Ian Bick that if someone’s meeting their secret partner, they’d probably want their car to be clean.
“When someone heads to the car wash, I think, ‘What’s next?’ It’s surprising how often they do that. Women don’t do it as much because they usually jump in the guy’s car; men prefer to drive. It’s rare for me to see a guy getting into a woman’s car.”
Ray says that when he has the person he’s watching and their secret partner together, it’s all about getting evidence. Besides using a regular long-lens camera to take photos and videos from far away, he also has some clever gadgets for filming his targets secretly. One of them is a fake coffee cup with a hidden high-definition video camera inside.
“If I go into a coffee shop or a supermarket, wherever I need to be, I just remove the lid, turn it on, put the cap back on and it appears like I’m strolling around with a coffee. Meanwhile, I’m recording everything,” he explained.
Ray mentions he’s had some thrilling adventures over the years – like when a man hired him to have his wife killed.
He shared an incident where he was approached by a man from Africa. The man wanted to serve his wife legal documents in the United States for child custody. He planned to take her to court to get custody of their two children and move them back to Africa.
Ray found the man trustworthy and documented the woman’s actions. Two weeks later, the man contacted Ray again, requesting continued monitoring of her actions.
He asked the reason, to which the man responded, “I just want to find out if she’s working and where the kids are going to school”.
Ray had a strange feeling before the woman left her house, so he watched her for about three hours. He thought, “This guy is already in court with her, everything should be fine. I don’t even know why I’m here – it’s not worth doing this case.”
