Many people are obsessed with smartphones and the iPhone remains one of the most coveted. The craze has reached new heights among teenagers, with some going to extreme lengths to get their hands on one. Recently, a Reddit user shared about their 19-year-old cousin, who demanded an iPhone and even went on a hunger strike until her parents gave in. The situation left her father in tears and sparked a heated debate among social media users, many attributing this behaviour to poor parenting.
In the Reddit post, the user further shared that the parents of their 19-year-old cousin agreed to buying the phone after she refused to eat for two days. However, when the parents explained that they couldn’t purchase the phone immediately due to a bank holiday, her behaviour only escalated. The situation took an emotional toll on the family, with the user’s uncle breaking down in tears as he struggled to gather funds. Eventually, the father managed to get the money and then they headed out to buy an iPhone.
“My cousin(19f) is not eating food from past two days, she is demanding iphone. Her parents agreed and told her that today is bank holiday but again she created huge ruckus. I never saw my uncle in tears, this was the first time. He managed the money somehow and now they went to buy iPhone,” the post on Reddit read.

The post quickly caught the attention of the online community, amassing over 1,400 upvotes. Social media users took to the comment section to share their thoughts, with many criticising both teenager’s actions and parents’ response.
One user offered advice, writing, “tell your uncle, this is the beginning..once you give in there’s no going back.”
Another pointed out, “Social media is creating vague values..most want to be held high in their circle and metrics to ranking can be : instagram profile, looks, capital. Our society seems to have a flawed value system.”
“There’s another side of the story. Parents shouldn’t keep their children clueless about the financial situation of the family. It keeps them grounded. The OP’s story is a prime example,” someone shared.
A person bluntly wrote, “Bad parenting 101,” while another expressed, “That is not even a child. She is 19 years old, an age where western parents stop funding you completely. As much as that girl is at fault, the parents are worse if they give in to her demands.”
Last week, a video surfaced online where a flower seller was forced into buying an iPhone for her son, who had gone on a three-day hunger strike to demand the costly phone.
This nithalla boy stopped eating food and was demanding iPhone from her mother. His mother finally relented and gave him money to buy iPhone. She sells flowers outside a mandir.
Too much love will always destroy children. Parents should know where to draw the line.
