You may agree or not but the physical appearance has a direct impact on our confidence. We all put effort into carrying ourselves well and some of us even seek medical help only to add to our natural appearance. But what if your attempts to look pleasant emerge to be disastrous? The case in point here is a man who had surgery to remove a huge nose growth that prevented him from leaving the house in daylight.

Former Navy sailor Ian Arthur, 64, originally from Manchester, sought medical advice after enlarged, red bumps on his nose started to develop more than ten years ago. He was diagnosed with rosacea which is a skin condition causing redness and sensitivity. Since his nose continued to expand, Ian was prescribed an ointment and a chemical scrub before the pandemic hit the world. However, the ointment and scrub did not help.

This led the man to isolate himself and he only used to leave his house to ride his motorcycle when his face would be covered by his helmet. Later, he was diagnosed with nasal deformity rhinophyma. Given the severity of the situation, Ian stepped in with the decision to take swift action and now, the excessive growth has been removed.

Ian, who served in the Navy for 32 years, spoke to Manchester Evening News about his condition. He noted, “It became much worse and much more noticeable until, by two years ago, I started to feel like a freak. In my isolation, I called my nose John, after John Merrick in The Elephant Man.”

The man underwent a two-hour CO2 laser treatment to get rid of the excess skin tissue around the nose. Dr Cormac Convery, who had experience in treating a more severe case of rhinophyma, restored the original shape of Ian’s nose. Ian further said, “I discovered the Ever Clinic, virtually on my doorstep. I saw pictures of what they had done with another poor soul who was, if anything, worse than me. The cost was affordable. I was dealt with in a single treatment of two and a half hours and, yes, it has changed my life.”

What's your reaction?
