Serious allegations of theft have emerged against former tennis star Camila Giorgi, suggesting that she left a villa in Italy with six months of unpaid rent and allegedly absconded with a 500kg antique table.
Giorgi left Italy amid authorities’ interest in questioning her regarding an alleged 400,000-pound unpaid tax bill, UK’s The Daily Express reported. This report comes as Giorgi recently retired from tennis, with her last match taking place at the Miami Open in May.
However, her abrupt retirement coincided with her appearance on the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s list of retired players. Her legal representatives have vehemently denied any link between her decision to retire and the alleged unpaid taxes.
Allegations against the 32-year-old include leaving the villa, located in Calenzano near Florence, without settling six months’ worth of rent and taking various sentimental items, including the antique table. The villa’s owner expressed dismay. According to the owner, the departure was unannounced, with neighbours reporting the sudden appearance of removal vans.
“Those objects are part of my mother’s life and mine,” said the owner in an interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica, as quoted in the British newspaper. “I want them back, at least this much, given that we have lost hope due to the thousands and thousands of euros in back rent.”
Upon arrival at the villa, the owner found it partially emptied, with the remaining items haphazardly stacked in the garden, suggesting a hurried departure. Giorgi’s legal team released a statement attributing her exit from the villa to a “divergence of views within the family” and a desire for a break to reflect on post-retirement life plans.
