As the Dobbspet-Doddaballapur stretch of the Bengaluru Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) in Karnataka has been functioning properly since its inauguration, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has recently announced that they will start collecting tolls on the 42-km-long stretch this Friday, i.e., June 14.
The stretch was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 11. The construction of this stretch has helped decongest many areas in Bengaluru that are often hit by brutal traffic. The toll charges on this road will be applicable to all personal and commercial vehicles, while two-wheelers will be exempt from paying the toll.
As reported by the Times of India, commuters who will be using the 76.15 km long ring road of Dobbspet-Hoskote, which connects Tumakuru Road with Bengaluru-Kolar Road via Doddaballapur and Devanahalli, will be required to pay a toll charge of Rs 185 for single journeys and Rs 275 for roundtrips if they complete it in a day.
It has been found that a vehicle’s number plate and weight will be scanned as soon as it reaches near 50 m from the toll plaza. If the users choose to pay through FastTag and every piece of information about the vehicle is fine, then the barriers to the toll will automatically open.
In an interview with TOI, KB Jayakumar, who is the project director of NHAI, revealed that they had already issued a public notice for the collection of tolls at the Hulikunte toll plaza for the 40-kilometre stretch from Dabaspet to Doddaballapur.
He also added, “Opening of the first Ring Road under the STRR project has helped in easing traffic congestion in city limits as vehicles from Tumakuru Road that are heading towards Hoskote bypass take this route without entering city roads.” He further explained that every day, around 15,000 to 20,000 trucks and other vehicles use STRR. After the Chennai-Bangalore highway is created, the number of these vehicles is likely to increase as well.
The 288-km STRR is being constructed to link Bengaluru with neighbouring towns such as Dobbspet, Devanahalli, Hoskote, and Ramanagara. The whole stretch is divided into three projects. Until now, only the Dobbspet-Hoskote stretch has been completed.
