McLaren Sets Sales Record, Expects It to Triple by 2020
Sports Series opens McLaren up to an entirely new audience and will be pivotal in developing sales volumes, says the company.

Over the course of 2015, the British supercar company hand-built and sold a remarkable 1654 vehicles, up from 1649 in 2014. However, the demand is such that the company is expecting to double that figure within the next 12 months.

Announcing the figures, Chief Executive Officer, Mike Flewitt, said: "2015 was a critical year in the development of McLaren Automotive. The launch of the Sports Series opens McLaren up to an entirely new audience and will be pivotal in developing our sales volumes from the 2015 levels of 1,600 to nearly triple that number by 2020."

What makes these seemingly tiny numbers so remarkable is that despite its decades of Formula One and CanAm racing glory, McLaren has only been building road cars for five years. Yet in that time it has gone from a standing start to becoming one of the most prized and desirable supercar marques on the planet.

To put the sales into perspective, at the beginning of July, Lamborghini announced that for the first time in its history it is on track to sell over 4000 in a single year. However, it has taken the iconic Italian supercar company 53 years to reach that point. Also Read: Lamborghini Hits Record Sales, Says Mostly Because of Huracan

McLaren is almost half way there after five years and despite the astronomical costs involved in starting a car company from scratch, McLaren is in profit and has been for three years.

However, unless the company can continue to innovate, entice and excite with its cars, this success could be short-lived.

"We need to remain profitable but also continue to invest in our future product portfolio," said Flewitt. "In 2015, this amounted to £124million, nearly 30% of revenues. This level of commitment to investing in future products is core to our business strategy."

By 2022 the company will have a new 15-car lineup and while McLaren has been openly reporting its financial good health, it doesn't want to give too much away about what to expect next from the marque, although it has been giving the motoring press an ‘unofficial' sense of what could be coming.

Perhaps most exciting is a new flagship inspired by the original McLaren F1 that keeps many of the same details while attempting to create a new supercar sub-genre.

Sources describe the new car, which could be unveiled as early as next year at Geneva, as a "Hyper GT." In other words, like the recently launched S570GT it will blend ludicrous performance with genuine luxury for cross-continental driving.
