Noida: Rs 20,000 Fine on Autos Plying on Expressway; Miffed Union Threatens to Protest
Traffic cops have already started fining violators and sent e-challans, a move which angered the auto union

A hefty fine of Rs 20,000 is being imposed on three-wheelers/autos which are found to be plying on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, the Uttar Pradesh Traffic Police said.

Traffic cops have already started fining violators and sent e-challans, a move which angered the auto union.

In June this year, the traffic department banned the movement of three-wheelers (autos, tempos, tractor-trolleys, bullock carts, e-rickshaws, and other slow-moving vehicles) on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway from Sector 14A to Pari Chowk.

The auto union threatened to launch a protest if the traffic department continued its action, reported Times of India.

Over the last few days, traffic cops are penalising offenders to the tune of Rs 20,000, however, auto drivers resist and, said that they cover a small section near the Mahamaya flyover to reach Amity University, Kalindi Kunj and Sarita Vihar.

The 25-km long six-lane Expressway connects Mayamaya Flyover in Noida to Pari Chowk in Greater Noida.

An auto driver Vijay Kumar, speaking to TOI, said, that he had also received e-challans under Sections 115 and 194 of the Motor Vehicles Act. He added, “The cops did not stop me nor apprise me of the violation but had taken a photograph of my auto and sent the e-challan. I earn Rs 500-600 in a day, how can I pay the penalty?”

“We have advised drivers to use the service lane of the highway, if needed, instead of Noida expressway,” TOI quoted Lal Babu, president of the Noida Auto Rickshaw Drivers Association, as saying.

Babu continued, “If autos are stopped from entering the expressway, they will have to take a longer route from Botanical Garden to Sector 37 and then towards Mahamaya flyover. This will cost more fuel and time. Consequently, increasing the passenger’s fare.”

On Wednesday, police officials had a meeting with the auto drivers union. The union demanded the cancellation of e-challans or they will hit the streets.
