The Future Toyota Adventure Concept, or FT-AC, is a conceptual reminder to the car-buying public that SUVs can be driven off-road and can be used for adventure and exploration as well as the drive to work.
As the SUV becomes the de facto shape for the majority of all new vehicle types on the road, the car's origin story is in danger of being lost to automotive history.
But with the FT-AC Toyota is attempting to show people that their family runaround can be completely on-trend in terms of design and yet stay true to its origins and be completely comfortable off-road and easy to maneuver over even the most challenging terrain.
"FT-AC is perfect for those outdoor enthusiasts who want to dial up the adventure on their weekend getaways," said Jack Hollis, group vice president and general manager, Toyota division.
The car has all of the most important ingredients needed for making a vehicle a capable off-roader. It has a long wheelbase, a wide track, good ground clearance and a proper all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring and differential lock.
It also has underbody skid plates, proper LED and fog lighting for traveling in the dead of night and even boasts infrared cameras in the door mirrors for complete peace of mind when heading off the trail in the complete unknown.
It also has big 20-inch rims to appeal to those that want the looks and the lifestyle, but they're wrapped in proper all-terrain tires, which in turn are partially hidden thanks to protective moulded wheel arch extensions.
But of course it wouldn't be a genuine concept car without some sort of quirky feature or focus on social media or connectivity. And the FT-AC manages to cover all of those bases. The front fog lights can be pushed out of their pods and fitted to a mountain bike. The infrared cameras can be detached and used away from the vehicle and their feed shared to various social networks via the car's wireless hotspot and cloud connection. And last, but not least, the car's corner lights can be used to provide ambient lighting -- say when sitting around a campfire -- or can double as flashguns to ensure that any pictures taken have the perfect lighting level.
