The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Monday launched a global standard climate action plan to achieve a net zero carbon emission level by 2050.
According to the civic body, the plan outlines a series of actions across seven sectors – energy and buildings, transportation, solid waste management, water, wastewater and stormwater, air quality, urban planning, greening and biodiversity, and disaster and management, to reduce carbon emission and enhance the tech city’s resilience to climate change.
The initiative was launched in collaboration with the citizens movement in Bengaluru.
As far as the implementation of the action plan is concerned, the BBMP will establish a dedicated Climate Action Cell. This cell will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing the implementation and working closely with relevant stakeholders.
“This is extremely important. B.PAC had earlier mooted this idea. There is a need for separate offices, it’s good that it’s advocated with government setup and officials and it can look at various sectors such as power, energy, waste etc. We citizens groups are also working together with the government and Municipality. A separate cell must be set up for this,” said Revathy Ashok, CEO of the Bengaluru Political Action Committee.
In addition to the Climate Action Cell, the BBMP has also launched a public awareness campaign called #BluGreenUru. This campaign encourages citizens and stakeholders to actively participate in conserving, restoring, and integrating the city’s natural infrastructure, fostering a collective effort towards building a more resilient Bengaluru in the face of climate change.
“Climate action is not an option, all companies, all the bodies, the government, legislators everybody must come together with erosion which is seen due to the climate. There’s much more we need to do and this is a good example of companies and the government coming together for a cause,” said Manas Das President of the Outer Ring Road Companies Association.
