Karnataka’s Davanagere Witnesses Saffron Cultivation For The First Time
Saffron cultivation to Davangere marks a significant departure from the conventional crops of groundnut, coconut, and vegetables commonly grown in the region.

In an unexpected agricultural breakthrough in the high-range district of Davanagere in Karnataka, Jacob Sathyaraj has achieved the successful cultivation of saffron, a crop traditionally associated with the northern region of Kashmir. Jacob’s pioneering efforts in bringing saffron cultivation to Davangere mark a significant departure from the conventional crops of groundnut, coconut, and vegetables commonly grown in the region.

Jacob Sathyaraj, employed as a water supplier in Harihar Municipality, not only manages his full-time job but also pursues the ambitious task of cultivating saffron in Davangere. Known as the largest producer of saffron in India, Jammu and Kashmir served as the inspiration for Jacob’s venture. He dedicated a specific room for saffron cultivation, employing various tools such as Thermocol and air conditioning to regulate the temperature and shield the crop from the region’s hot climate.

Procuring saffron seeds and essential knowledge from Kashmir, Jacob obtained one kilogram of saffron and 60 kilograms of saffron seeds from Pampur in Jammu and Kashmir for Rs 600. Due to weather constraints, 45 kilograms of saffron seeds remained viable for cultivation. Jacob opted for organic manure, avoiding chemical interventions in the cultivation process.

The initial harvest yielded a gratifying 12 grams of saffron, with an additional 10 grams expected to mature soon. Jacob is offering his saffron for sale at a price ranging from Rs 600 to 1,000 per gram. Saffron flowers are renowned for their applications in cosmetics, medicinal purposes, and for consumption by pregnant women.

Expressing his satisfaction with the outcome, Jacob emphasized the need for government support to encourage cultivation endeavours across various states. He proposed subsidies for those engaged in cultivation, advocating for policies that foster agricultural innovation and diversification.

Jacob’s success in cultivating saffron in Davangere not only opens new possibilities for agricultural diversification but also underscores the potential for unconventional crops to thrive in diverse climates across India. As he pioneers saffron cultivation in Karnataka, Jacob’s efforts serve as an inspiring example of agricultural innovation and the potential for localised cultivation of traditionally non-native crops.
