In yet another incident of Vandalism by Pro-Kannada activists, banners in front of Bengaluru’s Gopalan Arcade Mall were ripped down by a member of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike on Friday night.

The pro-Kannada activist, who came to the mall in an auto rickshaw, ripped down all the advertisement banners infront of the mall using a screwdriver and warned the mall authorities of dire consequences if the 60:40 Kannada rule is not implemented.

What is 60:40 Rule?

In a bid to preserve and promote the Kannada language, the Congress-led Karnataka government recently announced the mandatory use of 60 percent Kannada characters on nameplates and signboards of commercial shops in Bengaluru.

Since the government’s announcement, the state is witnessing violence with pro-Kannada activists vandalising signboards and hoardings of business establishments that were in English.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday said that the state government has decided that businesses across the state should have 60 percent space on signboards and nameplates in Kannada. He further directed shop owners to make the change by February 28, 2024.

Announcing the decision, Siddaramaih added that an ordinance will be brought to ensure the implementation of the 60:40 rule in the state.
