Mammootty works predominantly in Malayalam and Tamil language films. He has also worked in some Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi films in his 5 decade long career.

South Indian cinema boasts an array of iconic superstars, celebrated not just for their cinematic prowess but also for their substantial influence in the political arena. In the Tamil industry, luminaries like Rajinikanth and Thalapathy Vijay reign supreme, while Telugu cinema witnesses the dominance of Prabhas, Chiranjeevi, and many others. Amidst this galaxy of stars, the Malayalam film industry cherishes Mammootty, a legendary actor who has graced over 400 films. Remarkably, despite this prolific filmography, his movies have never crossed the coveted Rs 100 crore mark in box office collections.

Mammootty, a name synonymous with excellence in Malayalam and Tamil cinema, has also made indelible contributions to Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi films over his illustrious five-decade career. His accolades include three National Film Awards, seven Kerala State Film Awards, and numerous Filmfare Awards. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to Malayalam cinema, the government of India honoured him with the prestigious Padma Shri in 1998. Additionally, he has received the esteemed Kerala Prabha Award.

Before the glitz and glamour of cinema beckoned, Mammootty was a lawyer by profession, practising law for two years before he ventured into the world of movies. His cinematic journey commenced in 1971 with the film Anubhavangal Paalichakal, directed by KS Senthumadhavan. His breakthrough came with the film Ahimsa, catapulting him into the spotlight.

Among his expansive filmography, the three highest-grossing films feature prominently: Mamangam and Madhura Raja, both released in 2019, etching Mammootty’s name in the annals of box office success.

Beyond the silver screen, Mammootty serves as the chairman of Malayalam Communications, overseeing Malayalam television channels such as Kairali TV, Kairali News, and Kairali We. He also presides over the distribution-production house Playhouse and the Mammootty Kampany. In 1980, he tied the knot with Sulfat, and together, they are the proud parents of two children. Notably, their son, Dulquer Salmaan, has made a name for himself in the Malayalam industry, taking the lead role in Sita Ramam and making waves as a formidable actor.

Mammootty’s journey is far from over, with several exciting projects on the horizon, including Kaathal, Bazooka and Brahmayugam. His latest release, Kannur Squad, continues to soar at the box office, drawing inspiration from true incidents and solidifying his legacy as an unrivalled icon of Malayalam cinema.
