New Delhi: Amid global uncertainties, IMF Chief Christine Lagarde on Tuesday met Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and deliberated on the importance of the multilateral agency in stabilising the world economy.

"We particularly discussed the euro area situation and we also discussed the role of IMF and importance that emerging market economies have to play within organisation," Lagarde told reporters after meeting the Finance Minister.

Lagarde, who is on a two-day visit to India, said that she had elaborate discussions on the general economic situation.

Later, she met Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma over dinner. The two are believed to have discussed economic situation.

The IMF Managing Director, who is in New Delhi at a time when the European debt turmoil poses risk to the fragile global economic recovery, is likely to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday.

IMF is also looking to bolster its financial resources especially with contributions from emerging majors such as China and India.

She would be participating in the conference on 'China and India: Sustaining High Quality Growth' on Tuesday. The event is co-organised by the IMF.

Lagarde reached India after spending two days in China, where she met top Chinese officials, among others.

Addressing a gathering in Beijing yesterday, she emphasised that emerging economies need to calibrate macroeconomic policies both to guard against further fallout from the advanced nations as well as to keep overheating pressures in check.
