Maharashtra fuel strike called off
The strike was called off on Wednesday evening after talks between Maharashtra Finance Minister and petrol pump dealers.

Mumbai: The Maharashtra petrol pump strike was called off on Wednesday evening after talks between Maharashtra Finance Minister Jayant Patil and the petrol pump dealers in Mumbai earlier in the day.

The state Finance Minister agreed to look into the demand of the petrol dealers and promised a cut in the sales tax.

Pump owners in the state had stopped taking fresh stocks two days back, demanding a cut in the sales tax. The Maharashtra Government is expected to announce concessions very soon.

The concessions are likely to include slashing the sales tax on diesel from 34 per cent to 20 per cent. This is expected to bring down the price of diesel in Mumbai by almost Rs 4 per litre from its current level of Rs 39.68 per litre.

There is, however, no proposal to cut sales tax on petrol as of now. However, it has been proposed to cut the sales tax on petrol by 3 per cent to bring it down to 30 per cent from the current level of 33 per cent. If this cut is effected, it will lead to a marginal drop of 30-40 paise on the current petrol price of Rs 52.71 per litre.
