Vijay Sethupathi's Befitting Response To Reporter Asking About Resistance To Hindi In Tamil Nadu
He emphasised that forcing Hindi on anyone is inappropriate and clarified that Tamilians are open to learning other languages without resistance.

Actor Vijay Sethupathi stars alongside Katrina Kaif in the Hindi movie Merry Christmas, directed by Sriram Raghavan. The film shot simultaneously in Tamil, saw the trio engage with the press in Chennai on January 7 to promote the project. Notably, Sethupathi expressed displeasure when questioned by a reporter regarding his Hindi language learning during the media interaction.

During a recent interaction, a reporter brought up Tamilian citizens’ resistance to learning Hindi, which annoyed actor Vijay Sethupathi. Reflecting on a similar incident a few months ago with Aamir Khan, Sethupathi responded adeptly, criticising the idea of questioning actors about Hindi learning. He emphasised that forcing Hindi on anyone is inappropriate and clarified that Tamilians are open to learning other languages without resistance.

Expressing his enthusiasm, the actor shared his excitement upon receiving the offer to work with Sriram Raghavan, admiring the filmmaker’s past works such as Ek Hasina Thi, Badlapur, and Andhadhun. Reflecting on this, he mentioned receiving a DVD of Ek Hasina Thi seven years ago from a friend, appreciating the film’s quality.

Merry Christmas, after facing several delays, is finally scheduled to hit the screens on January 12. The film is gearing up for a fierce box office competition, with three major Tamil releases—Captain Miller, Ayalaan, and Mission: Chapter 1 —all slated to release on the same day.

Vijay Sethupathi’s films like Pizza, 96, Vikram Vedha, Master, and Super Deluxe have already gained popularity in the North. However, when he ventured into Hindi projects, particularly in Farzi, playing the role of a Special Task Force officer named Michael Vedanayagam, he expressed concern about potential trolling for his accent.

The 45-year-old actor, known for his reliability in both commercial and indie cinema in the South, has become highly sought after in the Hindi film industry. This recognition follows his notable roles in the web series Farzi and the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan. His Hindi film journey commenced with the 2023 release Mumbaikar, directed by Santosh Sivan, and he has further committed to Zee Studios’ silent feature, Gandhi Talks.
