BCCI Extends WPL Retention Deadline to November 7: Report
The last date to submit the final list of retained players has been extended to November 7. Each team can have a squad of 18 players.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended the deadline for Women’s Premier League (WPL) franchises to submit their list of retained players. Originally set for October 15, the franchises now have until November 7 to finalize their retentions.

As reported by Cricbuzz, the last date to submit the final list has been extended to November 7. Each team can have a squad of 18 players and like the Indian Premier League (IPL), the franchises can release players every year. The date of the mini-auction is yet to be revealed.

It has also been learned that the franchises will have a purse of INR 15 crore going into the mini-auction. Earlier, the teams had a purse limit of INR 12 crores in the inaugural season which was increased to INR 13.5 crores last year.

Following the upcoming season, there could be a mega-auction and a new team could also be added, the report stated further. Like IPL, the BCCI could also come up with a retention policy for the WPL as well as for the franchises.

Five teams will once again battle for the coveted title: Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and UP Warriorz. Harmanpreet Kaur led the Mumbai Indians to victory in the inaugural season in 2023, while Smriti Mandhana’s Royal Challengers Bangalore emerged as champions in the second edition.

While the BCCI is yet to officially announce the dates for the third season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), indications are that it will likely follow the February-March window of the previous two seasons.

The venues for the tournament also remain unconfirmed. However, the BCCI is likely to replicate the format of the second edition, which was successfully hosted across two venues – Bengaluru and New Delhi. The inaugural season, featuring 22 games, was held entirely in Mumbai.
