Royal Challengers Bengaluru needed a slice of luck during their thrilling IPL 2024 contest with Chennai Super Kings on Saturday night as the playoff spot seemed to evade their grasp.
Their prays were answered when MS Dhoni launched a hip-high full toss from Yash Dayal for a massive six to start the 20th over in which CSK needed 17 to make sure their net run-rate stays above that of RCB to make it to the playoffs even if they lose.
The ball landed on stadium’s roof and hence, a replacement ball was summoned which was much ‘better to bowl with’ and hence, Dayal was able to contain CSK to just one more in the over a turn of events that also included the big scalp of Dhoni.
Not only RCB defeated CSK but the margin of their triumph was more than enough to qualify for the playoffs on the basis of a superior net run-rate despite being level on points with their rivals.
“I thought the best thing to happen today was Dhoni hitting that six outside the ground,” Karthik quipped during his dressing room speech after the match.
“We got a new ball, which was much better to bowl with. And… Yes. Yash, that was good bowling. You have a doubt, always bowl a high, hip-high, full-toss, on-leg stump. Wherever he is, it’s a good mantra to follow when the ball is wet.”

Karthik then pointed out how RCB were prepared for this marquee clash with CSK with playoff spot on the line.
“We all know how proud our franchisee is and how our fans are. I think we gave them a treat to watch. Also, you’ve got to understand the gravity of this game. If you do take head-to-head, I think CSK-RCB has been one of the most marquee games of this tournament for many, many years now. And it’s only fair to say, I think, there have been many close games, but they have found a way sometimes to just get ahead of us,” Karthik said.
“Today, the way we played, I think coming into this game, there was this quiet sense of confidence about us playing the defending champions. And the way we came and played, we should be really proud of ourselves right up to the last ball,” he added.
