'Captaincy Will be Decided by...': Will Hardik Pandya be Named India T20I Captain? BCCI Secretary Jay Shah Answers Burning Question
With Rohit Sharma announcing his T20I retirement, it's being said that Hardik Pandya will takeover India captaincy in the format.

Rohit Sharma has bid farewell to T20Is after captaining India to world cup title win. The modern-day batting great couldn’t choose a better time than to retire on a high which has also set in motion the Indian team’s transition period.

Alongside Rohit, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja have also decided to draw curtains on their respective T20I careers meaning there are three spots to fill.

And not just that, the team needs a new T20I captain too with Hardik Pandya, who has led in the format in Rohit’s absence in the past, seems to be the first in running. However, BCCI isn’t yet ready to confirm a name with secretary Jay Shah leaving it to the selectors to finalise the successor.

“Captaincy will be decided by the selectors and we will announce it after discussing with them,” Shah was quoted as saying by news agency PTI on Monday.

Pandya came into the T20 World Cup after a below-par show in IPL 2024. However, at the T20I showpiece, he roared back into form, scoring 144 runs at a strike-rate of 151.57 and took 11 wickets at an economy of 7.64 as India became the champions.

“You asked about Hardik, there were lot of questions over his form but we and selectors showed faith in him and he proved himself,” Shah said.

Even Pandya himself is tightlipped over him succeeding Rohit.

The next T20 World Cup will be held in 2026.

“There is a lot of time for 2026. I am very happy for both Rohit and Virat…two giants and legends of Indian cricket, who thoroughly deserved this. It has been so amazing playing with them for so many years. We all will miss them but at the same point, this is the best farewell we can give them,” Pandya said after the final.

Meanwhile, Shah feels that India’s transition phase is already underway.

“Transition has already happened with three greats retiring,” he said.
