Royal Challengers Bengaluru pacer Yash Dayal became the talk of social media minutes after the start of the team’s IPL 2024 contest with Punjab Kings on Monday night. And not just because of his economical spell inside the Powerplay that saw him allowing just 10 runs in three overs during that phase.
With Dayal midway through the fifth over of PBKS innings, a controversial usage of a proverb by former India cricketer Murali Kartik who was on air to describe the left-arm pacer’s move from Gujrat Titans to RCB resulted in an uproar on social media.
Kartik was praising Dayal for his spell when he commented on GT releasing him ahead of the IPL 2024 players’ auction last year.
“It has been a good spell so far (from Dayal). Released by the Gujarat Titans, picked up RCB. As they say, someone’s trash is someone else’s treasure,” said Kartik.
After the furor on social media, RCB also responded to the remark with a post on X (formerly Twitter).
He’s treasure. Period. ❤???? pic.twitter.com/PaLI8Bw88g— Royal Challengers Bengaluru (@RCBTweets) March 25, 2024
Dayal, who represents Uttar Pradesh in domestic cricket, finished with bowling figures of 1/23 from his four overs.
The 26-year-old first came into the limelight when GT splashed Rs 3.2 crore at the IPL 2022 mega auction. He produced a decent show with 11 wickets from nine matches as GT became champions in their debut season.
His second season though will be remembered for conceding five sixes in an over to Kolkata Knight Riders batter Rinku Singh. The pacer was tasked to defend 29 runs in the final over of that contest in Ahmedabad but ended up conceding 30 runs following which he was dropped from the playing XI.
He eventually returned to play two more games but didn’t make any impact and later in 2023, was released by the franchise.
At the IPL 2024 players’ auction, RCB splurged a mammoth Rs 5 crore on Dayal to secure his signature after a bidding war with his former franchise.
