Former India cricketer turned commentator Dinesh Karthik talked about the possibility of witnessing Ravichandran Ashwin possibly return back into the Indian side for the series against England.
Ashwin, who joined the 500-wickets club in Test cricket on Friday after taking the wicket of England opener Zak Crawley, immediately left Rajkot for his hometown Chennai to attend to a medical emergency in his family.
“Ravichandran Ashwin has withdrawn from the Test squad, effective immediately due to a family medical emergency. In these challenging times, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the team fully support Ashwin.
The BCCI extends its heartfelt support to the champion cricketer and his family. The health and well-being of the players and their loved ones are of utmost importance. The Board requests respect for the privacy of Ashwin and his family as they navigate through this challenging time.
The Board and the team will continue to provide any necessary assistance to Ashwin and will keep the lines of communication open to offer support as needed. Team India appreciates the understanding and empathy of the fans and media during this sensitive period,” read a BCCI media advisory late in the night on Friday.
According to ICC rules, umpires can allow a substitute fielder if any player is unavailable, with the caveat being that players can keep wickets but is not allowed to bat or bowl. Devdutt Padikkal has come on as the player in place of Ashwin.
But today on Day 4, Karthik, on commentary, mentioned the possibility of witnessing the veteran spinner coming back into the side sometime during the England series itself, after conversing with members of the Indian team reportedly.
As per the regulations, a player stepping off the field must wait for an equivalent period before resuming play. However, Ashwin’s case, deemed unique by the umpires, warranted a departure from the conventional.
