Chennai Super Kings’ Matheesha Pathirana hit the headlines by taking an acrobatic catch during the Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Delhi Capitals on Sunday, March 31. His full-stretched effort silenced the crowd in Vizag as nobody could predict that Pathirana would have been successful in completing the stunning catch while being positioned at the short third-man region. The catch helped Mustafizur Rahman get rid of a well-set David Warner, who had already breached the 50-run mark.
Following the incident, fans praised Matheesha Pathirana sharing posts on social media. As Mustafizur Rahman got the wicket, some social media users also referred to the ongoing rivalry between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The rivalry between the two Asian countries has been a major talking point in recent times in international cricket.
A fan sarcastically wrote on social media platform X, (formerly Twitter), “This is the first time a Sri Lankan has helped a Bangladeshi.” Another quipped, “That’s why he (Pathirana) did not celebrate the catch.”

One fan posted a screenshot of both the comments on Instagram with a note– “Oh god. But the catch is mind-blowing.” It caught the attention of Matheesha Pathirana. The Sri Lankan star reshared the post on Instagram.
Speaking about the Sri Lanka-Bangladesh rivalry, both nations were involved in a heated on-field battle during the 2018 Nidahas Trophy where India emerged as the champions. Another controversial moment transpired in the World Cup, held in India last year, due to Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews’ timed-out dismissal. Coming back to IPL 2024, the catch of Matheesha Pathirana attracted a reaction from CSK legend MS Dhoni. Similar to the crowd, the World Cup-winning captain was also left in awe as he was seen smilingly appreciating the effort. Mustafizur Rahman bowled a full-length delivery to David Warner, who attempted a reverse lap. The shot seemed to have everything to bring a boundary until Pathirana came up with a stunning effort.

Apart from taking the catch, Matheesha Pathirana also demonstrated his sublime bowling in the match against Delhi Capitals. He picked up the wicket of Michell Marsh with a toe-crushing yorker before sending off Tristan Stubbs and Rishabh Pant to finish with a three-wicket haul. Despite his top-notch bowling, DC posted 192 runs on the board and CSK ultimately lost the match by 20 runs.
