The Indian Premier League (IPL) has always been about top-tier performances, be it individual or as a team. The country is gearing up for what promises to be another rip-roaring season of IPL as the 2024 edition will kick off on March 22.
The first match will be played between defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Chennai. As the game becomes more and more modern, achieving improbable feats with the bat has become much easier. The IPL has not always been about big scores, but when teams go big, they push the barriers to the greatest extent. In this article, we take a look at the top 10 highest team totals in IPL history.
263-5 by Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Pune Warriors India, 2013
The highest team total in IPL history was set by RCB in 2013 against the now-defunct PWI. The match took place at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Batting first, RCB posted 263 runs on the board, thanks to Chris Gayle’s historic knock. The West Indies opener scored an unbeaten 175 off just 66 balls, with his century coming up in just 30 balls, a record. In reply, PWI could manage to score just 133 runs as RCB won the game by 130 runs.

Opener Kyle Mayers scored a 24-ball 54, while Marcus Stoinis scored 72 off just 40 balls. Cameos from Ayush Badoni (43 off 24) and Nicholas Pooran (45 off 19) helped the team cross the 250-run mark. In reply, PBKS were all out for 201 as they slumped to a 56-run defeat.

This game allowed fans to witness one of the greatest partnerships in T20 cricket. 245-6 by Kolkata Knight Riders vs Kings XI Punjab, 2018
Yet another game where both teams scored over 200 runs. KKR posted 245 runs on the board after batting first, courtesy of fifties from Sunil Narine and Dinesh Karthik. Karthik, then KKR captain, finished the innings with late fireworks and scored a 23-ball 50 to help KKR post 245. In the run chase, KXIP (now called Punjab Kings) fell 32 runs short of the target.
240-5 by Chennai Super Kings vs Kings XI Punjab, 2008
Michael Hussey was the star of the show in this game. CSK posted 240 runs in 20 overs, which ended up becoming the highest team total of the inaugural edition. After batting first, openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway gave CSK a solid start, with the latter scoring 56. After both openers departed, it was a Rahane-Shivam Dube show, as the duo scored 85 runs in 32 balls in their partnership for the third wicket. Dube departed for a 21-ball 50, while Rahane remained unbeaten on 71 off just 29 balls. Jason Roy and Rinku Singh provided some resistance in the run chase, scoring a fifty each, but KKR lost the game by a hefty 49-run margin.
235-1 by Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Mumbai Indians, 2015
This was completely an AB de Villiers show. These two sides met at the Wankhede Stadium in 2015, and RCB made full use of the venue’s relatively shorter dimension. After losing Chris Gaye in the fourth over for cheap, Virat Kohli and ABD, especially the latter, tormented the Mumbai Indians bowling lineup. Both Kohli and ABD remained unbeaten, scoring 82 and 133, respectively. The score was too much for the eventual 2015 champions as they were beaten by 39 runs.
